Outer Banks Facts
Here are some information tidbits:
The area draws nearly 250,000 people each week during the height of the summer season.
The most infamous of all high seas pirates was Edward Teach, better known as Blackbeard, who set up shop on the south end of Ocracoke Island.
On December 17, 1903, the Wright brothers soared over Kill Devil Hills sand dunes in the world's first airplane, staying aloft 59 seconds, flying 852 feet.
